Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 3

(Continued from Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 2)

SELECOES DE TERROR  21-30

Early issues from Editora Continental / Outubro must be a rare thing.  Very few of them have been posted online in their entirety, few of them turn up for sale online, and it's even difficult to find covers posted.  But I do what I can.

About 2 years in, Continental was hit with a cease-and-decist order from some other publisher who had apparently filed for registration of the name "Continental".  As a result, they changed their name to "Outubro" (October), perhaps because of their emphasis on horror and its connection with the Halloween holiday of that month.

Personally, I wish websites would simply lump any books from Continental / Outubro / Taika together and treat it like the SINGLE publishing company it really is.  It would make things a lot simpler all-around.  I mean, the GCD does it with Timely / Atlas / Marvel!

Many of these have not turned up yet.  But I'm setting this page up for them in any case, for when they do.

ENJOY!

I'm making an exception in this case because not only does this book actually have the full "SDT" logo on it, but it appears to be the very 1st "DRACULA" comic from this publisher with the character's name in the book's title.  While many different "Almanaques" in later years were all-reprint collections, this giant-size issue may have contained all-NEW material!

Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 2

(Continued from Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 1)

SELECOES DE TERROR  11-20

Early issues from Editora Continental must be a rare thing.  Very few of them have been posted online in their entirety, few of them turn up for sale online, and it's even difficult to find covers posted.  But I do what I can.

Something that has apparently confused a LOT of fans down in Brazil is the way Continental / Outubro / Taika grouped multiple series under "umbrella" titles.  The biggest example is "Selecoes De Terror apresenta", which appeared on most issues of CLASSICOS DE TERROR, HISTORIAS SATANICAS, HISTORIAS SINISTRAS, PAGINAS SINISTRAS, NAIARA A FILHA DE DRACULA, and so on.  Because so many issues are rare, hard to come by, and NOT represented on various websites (meaning, MANY issue numbers are just plain missing), many fans I've noticed have made the mistake of thinking they're all one series.  Trust me-- THEY'RE NOT.  Too many duplicate issue numbers have turned up for it to be mistakes or just some sort of "chaotic" behavior.

In addition, Brazil suffered with such an extreme inflation problem, that the cover prices of books kept changing on a shockingly regular rate.  So much so, that one can often use the cover prices to determine a book's release date, within a several-month period.  And those cover prices are CONSISTENT.  Which really confirms and strengthens my belief that just about every comic from Taika had 2 numbers-- a general "production" number for everything listed as "Apresenta", and the actual issue number for each separate series.  It's just that in many cases, the production numbers are NOT listed.  And they were never listed on the covers until 1969.

For the purposes of this blog, each blog page will focus on a SINGLE series.  Just to keep things "organized".

ENJOY!

Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 1

SELECOES DE TERROR  1-10

Editora Continental / Outubro / Taika were 3 names used by the same small publisher in Brazil.  The work of artists Jayme Cortez & Miguel Penteado, they decided to form the company in 1959 after working several years for Editora De Selva, and getting tired of taking the bus to work while their bosses kept buying new cars.  Both Continental and Outubro turned out to be registered by other companies, causing years of legal hassles, before someone finally decided to rename it after their niece.  (You can't make up stuff like this.)  Sadly, around that time, Cortez & Penteado had a major falling-out, which saw Cortez going into advertising, while Penteado also left to form a new company of his own, Graphic Editora Penteado (GEP).  But while they were together, they produced some wonderful comics, many of them in the horror genre, each doing many gorgeous, stunning cover paintings!

After the 2 founders left, Taika continued for several years, though the quality of their printing dropped, the number of reprints increased, and a general sense of chaos prevailed.

I admit-- I've really become fascinated with this publisher, perhaps in part due to the aura of mystery surrounding them.  Which is to say, it's been extremely challenging compiling information about them, not to mention getting my hands on scans of their stories.

While Continental published a variety of genres, I think it's safe to say that HORROR was their big thing.  And their "main" title, the "anchor" for it, was SELECOES DE TERROR.  Whatever else might have been included over time, every issue featured DRACULA.  This was more than a decade before Marvel's more famous TOMB OF DRACULA with Gene Colan.  While relatively obscure outside of Brazil, I believe this series features quality writing & artwork, and deserves to be more well known worldwide.

By the way, your eyes are not deceiving you.  Quite a few covers are signed
"M. Penteado".  Do not be fooled.  They are ALL the work of Jayme Cortez,
for reasons I have been sworn not to pass on.  I'm not kidding.  ENJOY!
