Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 10

(Continued from Selecoes De Terror, Pt. 9)

SELECOES DE TERROR  91-100

By the end of the 1960s, Taika was becoming, if anything, more chaotic.  Since the beginning, they had lumped several titles together in the indicias which read "Selecoes De Terror apresenta", and there was always a higher number there than on the cover, which had the numbering for the individual series.  But in 1969, they began putting the "production" numbers on the covers, which must have confused a lot of people.  Apparently, to this day, there are people who don't realize that nearly every book had TWO different numbers... which has caused confusion on various websites, online databases, and sites like Mercado Livre where people are selling the books as back-issues.

At this point (6-30-2017), I'm not actually sure exactly how many issues of the SELECOES DE TERROR series there were... because the Guia Dos Quadrinhos database mistakently has the later numbers lumped together with them.

The GDQ does have Dracula stories listed for issues 95, 96 & 97... but the last cover that's turned up is 94.  Oh well!  We'll see as time goes by what else turns up.

Sometime in 1970, the original SELECOES DE TERROR, which had Dracula as its star, was replaced with the self-titled DRACULA series.  I'll be getting to that... soon!

ENJOY!

SELECOES DE TERROR  81-90

Early issues from Editora Continental / Outubro must be a rare thing.  Very few of them have been posted online in their entirety, few of them turn up for sale online, and it's even difficult to find covers posted.  But I do what I can.

Sometime in the mid-1960s, Continental / Outubro founders Jayme Cortez & Miguel Penteado had a falling out.  Cortez left to go into advertising, while Penteado left to start a new publishing house, Graphic Editora Penteado (GEP).  This left the once artist-driven company in the hands of their business partners-- the accountants.  Around this same time, Editora Abril (April) hit them with ANOTHER "cease-and-decist" order, as they had registered a Trademark on every month of the year.  Bering forced to change their company name for the 2nd time in under 5 years, they hit on "Taika", the name of one of their nieces. (I swear, you just could not make up a story like this.)

The company continued on for another decade, although the number of reprints increased exponentially, and the quality of their printing (and cover design work) steadily nosedived.  A sad end to an outfit that started out so promising.

But in the meantime, in spite of all that, they did manage to knock out some FABULOUS material, including a TON of new covers among the growing number of reprints.  MOST of the new covers were by Nico Rosso, who also became the main artist on their long-running "Dracula" series.

Personally, I wish websites would simply lump any books from Continental / Outubro / Taika together and treat it like the SINGLE publishing company it really was.

Many of these have not turned up yet.  I'll be posting them when they do.

Over a 2-year period, I slowly pieced together a baffling mystery about many of Taika's books, which was that several series would be lumped together in a single numbering, which would be listed on the indicia inside the books.  In 1969, they started putting those "group" or "production" numbers on the covers... just to add to the confusion.

ENJOY!

Early issues from Editora Continental / Outubro must be a rare thing.  Very few of them have been posted online in their entirety, few of them turn up for sale online, and it's even difficult to find covers posted.  But I do what I can.

About 2 years in, Continental was hit with a cease-and-decist order from some other publisher who had apparently filed for registration of the name "Continental".  As a result, they changed their name to "Outubro" (October), perhaps because of their emphasis on horror and its connection with the Halloween holiday of that month.

Personally, I wish websites would simply lump any books from Continental / Outubro / Taika together and treat it like the SINGLE publishing company it really is.  It would make things a lot simpler all-around.  I mean, the GCD does it with Timely / Atlas / Marvel!

Many of these have not turned up yet.  But I'm setting this page up for them in any case, for when they do.
